On the way to school on Wednesday, Chispa is now reading EVERYTHING she sees, which is super cool. Seeing the freeway sign, What's San ....... Mommy? "San Jose" Chispa, that's Spanish, so it's a toughie. Why's it Spanish? We'll it's Spanish because the Spanish came here, and named everything after Catholic Saints (San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Barbara, San Bernadino, San Rafael see what I mean?), and had missions to convert all the Native Americans. What's a Saint? Well it's sort of a person, who, after they die becomes to Catholics sort of like an angel and sort of like someone to pray to, but only once they are dead, so I think they pray to God, and Jesus, and then some of the Saints. Why did they make the Native American's convert? Well, they thought they were helping them. We know some people who converted by choice. Like our friend C., he converted to Judaism because his wife C. was Jewish, not because anyone told him he had to. Right. Right.
That, my friends, was in a 15 minute car ride to school in the am.

Ayiyi! I had a similar conversation with G about Thanksgiving. In order to discuss that holiday, you first must explain what a native American is, who the pilgrims were, what religious persecution is, yada yada. Bigger convo than I was originally planning!
I've stumbled on how to explain a Saint, it's sticky stuff.
